The events begin before the heat of the day on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 and last until the blazing sun leaves us on Saturday, August 21st, 2010!

GW2 – Progression and Leveling in Guild Wars 2

Hi, my name is Isaiah Cartwright (Izzy, as some like to call me), and I’m a Game Designer for Guild Wars 2. Today I’d like to talk about a subject near and dear to my heart: character progression in Guild Wars 2.

You know that point in other MMOs when, after playing for a few hours, you look down at your experience bar and wonder, “WTF? Has my experience bar even moved at all?” Nobody enjoys feeling like they haven’t made any progress even though they’ve been playing their character all day. We hate it as much as you do; it drives us insane!

Our goal with Guild Wars 2 is to flatten out the leveling curve, keeping progression simple and straightforward. We expect everyone to make a reasonable amount of progression with each play session. It shouldn’t take days of playing before you feel like you have made any progress, and you definitely shouldn’t have to kill a bunch of creatures or do a bunch of repetitive tasks just to see what’s over that next hill. We want our progression to keep up with your play style. If you’re a casual gamer who plays for a few hours here and there, why should you feel like it’s going to take you a decade to finish your character? If you’re a hardcore player, why shouldn’t you be able to blast through the game with skill and speed, trying to experience every last bit of content?

EQ2 – Fan Faire – We’ve Got Your App!

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and you’re coming to Fan Faire 2010, be sure to download the free Fan Faire app!

Just visit the App Store, search for Fan Faire, and you’ll find the SOEFanFaire app.

The app includes the Fan Faire schedule, maps, news, dining and travel.

For added customization, you can choose the panels and events you want to attend by clicking on the event in the schedule, then turning the slider to “on” next to My Schedule. That panel or event will then be added to your short list on the My Schedule button.

If you downloaded the 2009 app or previewed the 2010 app already, be sure to update it again through the App Store. To do this, open the App Store and click on the Updates button, then download the update. Things have changed, even in the last 24 hours. The schedule will automatically update throughout the day, in case of any last-minute changes.

EverQuest II’s Lead Programmer, Greg “Rothgar” Spence, created the app in his free time at home. (Yes, we do let devs go home on occasion!) If you find it useful, be sure to leave a review! And for those who long for a Droid version, perhaps one of our Droid-programming players might create one for next year. (Hint hint!)

We can’t wait to see you at Fan Faire! Less than 48 hours to go!

EQ2 – Fan Faire – Don’t Forget to /testcopy for the Tournaments

If you’re attending Fan Faire 2010 and are interested in participating in the EQII Platinum-Pass Battlegrounds tournament on Thursday night, or the Zraxth’s Unseen Arcanum tournament on Friday, you might want to compete with your own character. If you just read that statement and said, “Yes. Yes, I do!” then keep reading to find out how!

To enter the tournaments with a character you already know and love, please be sure to type /testcopy while you’re logged into the game with the character you wish to compete with, sometime before Thursday. (It can take up to 24 hours to update copied characters, so the sooner the better!)

There will also be buffing available for characters created on-site.

Please note that doing a /testcopy of your character does not guarantee your place in the tournaments. Signing up at Fan Faire is on a first come, first served basis and is the only way to get a seat in the tournament. Doing a /testcopy beforehand is to make sure your character gets copied over if that’s the toon you want to play with, and will simplify the process if you do end up competing in either of the tournaments.

Don’t forget that in order to see your copied character you need to make a character on one of the test servers first!

The Battlegrounds tournament will run from 10pm PDT until 1am PDT on Thursday night, after the Welcome Reception, during the Late Night Gaming session in the Grand Ballroom. Sign-ups will be available in the Platinum Lounge earlier in the afternoon.

The Zraxth’s Unseen Arcanum tournament will run from 10:30am PDT until 6:30pm PDT on Friday in the Grand Ballroom. Sign-ups will take place during badge pick-up and registration. Visit the Community Relations table for more information.

Make sure you /testcopy your character as soon as possible!! We look forward to seeing you at the tournament.
