GW2 – Talking Heads: VO and Dialogue in GW2

Hey there. I’m Bobby Stein, the Lead Writer for Guild Wars 2. My group writes and edits a variety of game content, from voiced scenes and cinematics to in-game books and UI text. We work closely with content and world designers, artists, programmers, sound engineers, and QA personnel to ensure your eyes are entertained, your ears are pleased, and your funny bones are tickled ever so subtly. If you’ve been keeping track of our development progress, you already know something about our combat system , how dynamic events work, and our unflinching commitment to storytelling. It’s time you learned how we’re bringing Tyria alive with world-class voice talent and a new approach to dialogue.

GW2 – The Road to gamescom: Assuring Quality

Bob Green, GW2 QA Team Lead

I’m really excited to see what the public thinks of the dynamic event system and its impact on the in-game world. Some of the changes are subtle and not as noticeable as others, but every event can make a change in the world. Maybe a vendor opens to sell a product because you helped an event succeed. Maybe that vendor only sells a different product if the event fails. It’s going to take some time and a little brain power to figure out all the ways that some of these events make their impressions on the world.

Joe Belousek, GW2 QA Maps Team Lead

I’m most excited to see how people react to the new world. So many people have experienced Tyria already and will enjoy seeing familiar places again. Veteran players’ nostalgia and new players’ genuine giddiness will make the world seem 100 times more impressive and beautiful than it already is. Divinity’s Reach is going to blow some minds.

Joe Longworth, GW2 QA Events Team Lead

As the QA Team Lead assigned to work on dynamic events, I coordinate a team of incredibly passionate and skilled testers who are working on some of the most mind-blowing content we’ve ever had the good fortune to test. We have to thoroughly test all of the myriad dynamic events in the game, and if you’ve read Colin’s preview of this system, you just might appreciate the scope of that task.  Testing these events effectively is rewarding in and of itself, but for me, the biggest reward is seeing it all come together and that the events just work. The dynamic event system in Guild Wars 2 is unlike anything I’ve ever tested before, much less played in someone else’s game, and I cannot wait to see how fans react to it.

Anthony Ordon, QA Tools Team Tester

I think the public is going to really enjoy the charr. So far, they’re my favorite thing about the game. There’s something incredibly epic about watching them taking on monsters in the demo level. As a playable race, they’re pretty unique; definitely not something you see in a typical MMO.

SWTOR – Jedi Knight HoloNet Update!

While I AM happy to see Jedi Knight fielding it’s specializations, they are maybe a little TOO close to the Sith Warrior’s. Armor heavy tank or dual wielding damage dealer. I agree with the tank/dps split, but I want the experience of being a Jedi melee specialist to be hugely different from that of being a Sith melee. I mean, is it going to be, I slice you to bits with the exact same moves, but THIS time I do it with ANGER? Just loses it’s appeal.

More importantly, it threatens a precedent. Will the consular and the inquisitor differ only in the GRAPHIC that they use to immobilize a group of enemies with damaging force energies?

Will the difference between the smuggler and the agent be what KIND of portable cover they set up, and what graphic they use for their guns?

At least we know the bounty hunter can fly, the republic trooper doesn’t do that. Hopefully that will be the way of things with all the characters, I was looking forward to 16 distinct play experiences, not 8 with a choice of 2 different skins.

GW2 – Walking the Walk, Arenanets passion.

It’s been a few months since I posted our design manifesto for Guild Wars 2, and since then we’ve written a lot about how we’re re-thinking the MMO – everything from combat and dynamic events to personal story – through dozens of detailed follow-up articles and interviews.

You can tell by now how passionate we are about this. At ArenaNet we still dream of the promise that online worlds once held, before they all started following the same MMO formula: the same level grind and scheduled rewards; the same static, unchanging worlds; the same quest mechanics; the same “holy trinity” of class balance. We know the industry can do better. We’ve dedicated ourselves to innovating in online worlds, and we’re going to hold ourselves to the highest standards.

So you’ve read these articles, and in general we know your reaction has been, “That all sounds great in theory, but I’ll believe it when I see it.” Well, get ready, because we’ve talked the talk, and now we’re going to walk the walk. Today we’re releasing a video that showcases all this innovative gameplay we’ve been talking about, and next week we’ll present a hands-on demo to the 250,000 attendees of gamescom in Cologne, followed by a second showing at PAX Prime in Seattle two weeks later.

Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll see in the demo.

You’ll be able to play a human character starting at level 1, or a charr character starting at level 47. For your first demo I recommend you play as human. You’ll get to experience the personal, branching story we’ve been talking about; you’ll get to band together with other players to defend human villagers and push back marauding centaurs in a variety of events; you’ll get to experience the active combat system and cross-profession combos; and you’ll have a huge open world to explore. Then, once you’re an expert at the game, come back and try playing again as a high-level charr. You won’t see as much story playing as a charr (since we don’t want to spoil the story for you that far into the game) but instead you’ll have a wide variety of high-level skills to experiment with, and you’ll be able to participate in some truly epic battles.

You’ve seen footage of Divinity’s Reach, the last great human city. Now come experience it in person. It’s enormous and detailed, and full of amazing things to discover. This is where your human character’s home is located, and you’ll keep coming back to it as your personal story plays out.

Check out the scene in the video with giant hands reaching out from the ground creating a vortex of destruction. That’s an earth elemental, summoned by an enemy shaman as part of a multiplayer event near the start of the human story. You’ll probably fight it as a level 1 character. That’s quite a step up from killing ten rats!

That enormous steel structure in the video is called Steeleye Span. It’s a charr stronghold whose cannons hold the line against an army of corrupted dragon minions that rise up from the scorched earth in an area known as the Brand. Come play as a charr and man those cannons!

And watch out for the dragon, named The Shatterer. He’s a special rank of dragon that terrorizes the Brand. You’ll see him in the demo too.

You’ll even see us in the demo. We’re so excited to be able to play with you and show off Guild Wars 2 for the first time that our entire company will be playing the game remotely with trade show attendees during gamescom and PAX. In the case of gamescom, that’s going to be equivalent to a series of all-night LAN parties for us – we’ll be staying up from about 1:00 AM to 11:00 AM each day to play with you – but our fans in Europe are worth it!

It’s a huge game world and a huge demo, and there’s more to experience than I could ever possibly write about, so come see it for yourself and tell us what you think. And even if you’re not able to play the game, if you like what you’ve seen and read, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to find out more. We’re not exactly shy about our opinions.

We hope to see you in-game!

SWTOR – The Mandalorian Wars

The Mandalorian Wars included some of the bloodiest battles in the Republic’s history. Mandalore the Ultimate’s relentless campaign to goad the Jedi into open conflict cost the lives of millions. Though the entrance of a Jedi splinter faction into the war is perceived as the factor that turned the tide against the Mandalorians, the perseverance of Republic soldiers and pilots like Carth Onasi cannot be underestimated. Jedi Master Gnost-Dural’s historical investigation analyzes the conflict with the perspective of modern events, highlighting the implications for the war against the Sith Empire.

BTC 311 – Too often, the Mandalorian Wars are characterized solely as a prelude to the Jedi Civil War, but the events surrounding the conflict itself bear close examination. When Mandalore the Ultimate called together the clans and began augmenting his armies further with Neo-Crusaders, his intention was to pull the Jedi Order into open conflict. As is the tradition in their culture, the Mandalorians sought to establish themselves as the most powerful faction in the galaxy by defeating the faction they considered to be their greatest rivals. Though the Jedi Council resisted the Mandalorian challenge, the splinter group led by Revan and Malak eventually joined the fray and won the war. Though there has never been a hint that the Sith were involved in the Mandalorian Wars, new analysis from Jedi Master Gnost-Dural suggests that the influence of the dark side was involved. The bittersweet victory in the Mandalorian Wars took a toll on the Republic for which the price is still being paid to this day…
